More than one way to skin a …!

The earliest printed citation of this proverbial saying, that I can find, is in a short story by the American humourist Seba Smith - The Money Diggers, 1840: "There are more ways than one to skin a cat," so are there more ways than one of digging for money.


ARCHIBUS provides two means of accessing the features within each application area of the product:


  • The Process Navigator takes a prescriptive, directed approach to each application area.  

It organises the best practice goals into a linear set of tasks, assigns these tasks to roles and processes, and assigns these processes to activities.   


The Process Navigator is an editorial view of current facility and infrastructure management practice and walks you through the goals that have the most currency in the industry and the highest ROI for your skill and data development effort.  


You can usually get started with one of the Process Navigator activities using a few of the skills and concepts topics in the help.


  • The Domain Navigator takes a descriptive, pluralistic approach to each application area.  

It aims to be a complete, organised taxonomy of observed practice in the industry.  


You will find many more features and hundreds more reports on the Domain Navigator than on the Process Navigator.  


You often have to read more of the skills and concepts topics in the help system to get started with the Domain Navigator. So there is an initial investment to learning to use the domain navigator, with the advantage that you have more commands, options, and flexibility.


Typically, users will start with the Process Navigator and target the best practice goals with a directed training and implementation approach. Successive processes or activities are targeted in later phases, typically with a 30 to 90-day timeline for results.


If an organisation finds that they need more advanced features -- such as automatic space allocation in Strategic Master Planning, mentioned in the last blog, then they should investigate the Domain Navigator.


The two approaches act as two views to the same material: data developed in one interface is immediately available through the other, and vice versa.  


Nor is the choice all or nothing: you may have some administrators and managers using the Process Navigator and the business process owner using the Domain Navigator at the same site for different purposes.


Moreover, both navigation environments use the same view format, and both are open to extension.  You can add views created for the Process Navigator to the Domain Navigator, and vice versa.

Using the Process Navigator to access and develop data helps you focus on just the tasks required for your job or role, providing an efficient environment for data development and management.


To organise the project data, ARCHIBUS provides the Process Navigator which is organised into:


  • Domains: The domains are areas of practice organised by the building life cycle: Real Estate Portfolio Management, Capital Project Management, Space Planning & Management, and so on.  Each domain consists of a series of applications.
  • Applications: Within ARCHIBUS these represent discrete business functions or automation goals with a defined outcome or business benefit.  For instance, you may wish to implement the Space Chargeback application to improve accountability for space usage.
  • Processes or Roles: Each application, in turn, consists of a series of processes or roles that correspond to deployment responsibilities.  For instance, the Move Management application divides tasks appropriate for Move Requestors, Move Coordinators, Data Coordinators, and Craftspeople into separate, dynamic menus.  When a user signs in, they see only the tasks appropriate for their role. This approach simplifies the software, increases data security, and reduces training.  

Similarly, processes for remote managers are separated from data development processes.  The result is that the applications remain integrated, but are still accessible from within Windows, within your CAD program, or on the Web.


  • Tasks. The task is the actual selection that a user makes to perform an action, such as editing a floor plan drawing, examining a report, editing a database record, and so forth. For example, a user might select the "Define Rooms by Buildings " task and enter data in the resulting grid to develop room records.

Within each environment, the Process Navigator may display a different set of tasks. For example, the Smart Client Process Navigator focuses on data entry and does not display report tasks. Similarly, the Smart Client Process Navigator may include tasks for launching CAD, which are not available in the Web Central Process Navigator.


The Process Navigator provides a structure for developing and presenting data in an organised, easy-to-follow manner, based on your role within the company. Typically a business process owner or ARCHIBUS program manager will configure the Process Navigator so that it presents only tasks that are appropriate to your role within the organisation. Therefore, your Process Navigator may include different applications, processes, and tasks than that of your co-workers.
